9/19/2021 0 Comments The Relationship Between Social Learning Theory and Binge Eating Therapy for the Obese IndividualBehavioral change theory describes how people change their behavioral patterns over time and why. As with nutrition and physical activity recommendations, behavioral change theories offer a biological perspective on why and how people or groups modify their behavior over time. The underlying assumption of the theory is that individuals need a certain amount of stimulus to cause them to modify their behavioral patterns, while in groups it is more important for the group size to provide such stimuli. However, there are some limitations to this theory. The underlying assumption of behavioral change is that individuals and families differ so much that it would be impossible to alter their behavior without altering the entire structure of their lives. However, this assumption doesn't apply to changing one's behavior as it applies to individuals. For instance, when an individual changes his or her behavior, it doesn't mean that they will become identical to the new behavioral pattern. There may still be differences between them, but they are minor compared to what would occur if the behavior was changed through social cognitive therapy. Social learning theories on behavioral change psychology also suggest that differences among individuals can be accounted for by differences in self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is the degree to which an individual is confident in his or her abilities and is a key component of social learning. This means that an individual who is low in self-efficacy is less likely to change their behavioral patterns than one who is high in self-efficacy. Additionally, both self-efficacy and social learning are associated with self-esteem and these aspects are positively associated with self-esteem. There have been numerous studies on these two learning theories. Most research supports that the relationship between these two variables is negative for behavioral change. However, it is also true that behavioral change can occur without the intervention of either a treatment team or an outside source. For example, an individual can go through a prolonged period of binge eating and abuse yet remain healthy, at least emotionally, internally speaking. The individual may not be able to admit to the abuse but be unable to change their behavioral patterns because they feel there is nothing wrong with the way they are acting. As we can see, the relationships between these two learning theories are far from conclusive. These learning theories provide useful information that will help in understanding the differences between overweight people and those that are thin. It also provides valuable insight into how to treat the behaviors that are currently being exhibited by obese individuals. However, weight gain should not be considered a symptom of an illness but rather a part of the larger picture of an unhealthy lifestyle. The focus needs to shift from treatment of obesity as a disorder to one of a medical issue and a focus on prevention. Prevention remains the best ways to change a behavior when addressing any type of disorder or illness. Therefore, behavioral change should be considered as a viable treatment option for people who are struggling with extreme obesity. This type of behavioral change therapy offers the most successful chance at success when it comes to behavioral change and weight loss in patients who are battling anorexia nervosa. Behavioral therapy is widely recognized as a successful treatment that has resulted in increased levels of health awareness, improved eating habits, and a decreased number of hospital admissions due to complications related to this debilitating disorder. This speaks volumes when it comes to the importance of being engaged in a regular exercise routine as a part of achieving optimal fitness levels and overall health.
